Some people are born into opportunity. Others grow up fighting just to survive. Scott Anthony’s story begins in the streets of Chicago, where poverty, violence, and gang culture shaped his early life long before he had the chance to choose a different path.

By the time he was a teenager, Scott was already deeply embedded in street life. Burglaries, gang fights, and criminal activity were part of the environment he grew up in. In neighbourhoods where survival depended on toughness, many young men followed the same trajectory. Some ended up dead, others in prison.

Scott himself admits he was heading in that exact direction. Crime offered adrenaline, fast money, and a reputation on the streets. But it also came with constant danger and the looming threat of prison or worse. Looking back, he describes those years as reckless, driven by energy, anger, and the belief that the street life was the only path available.

What makes his story remarkable is not how it started, but how it changed.

Life as a Fugitive and the Moment Everything Changed

Scott’s criminal career escalated as he got older. Robbing drug dealers, dealing drugs, and operating within organised criminal circles became part of everyday life. At one point he had multiple felonies and serious police attention focused on him.

Eventually, a run-in with law enforcement forced him to flee to Mexico, where he lived as a fugitive.

Living on the run brought a reality check. Life as a fugitive meant constant paranoia. Every knock at the door could be the police. Every stranger might recognise him. Building a normal life was impossible while hiding from authorities.

The turning point came after he was finally arrested. Sitting in jail gave him something he had rarely experienced before: time to think.

An attorney named Thomas Garwood played a major role in helping him navigate his legal troubles. More importantly, that moment forced Scott to confront the direction his life had taken. He realised he had disappointed almost everyone who had ever cared about him.

That realisation became the catalyst for change.

Walking Away From Crime

Leaving the criminal world behind is easier said than done. When someone grows up surrounded by the same people, the same neighbourhoods, and the same lifestyle, cutting ties can feel like abandoning family.

Scott faced that exact challenge after being released.

Most of his friends were still involved in the same criminal activities. The easy option would have been to fall back into that world. Instead, he made a deliberate decision to distance himself from it.

He started working legitimate jobs and focused on building a future that did not rely on crime. The discipline that once went into planning robberies and criminal operations was redirected into business and work.

That decision changed everything.

The Unexpected Opportunity That Changed His Life

Ironically, the opportunity that transformed Scott’s life arrived through something simple: two boxes of Cuban cigars.

While travelling in Cuba, he bought the cigars almost as an afterthought. When he later gave them to a friend back in Chicago, the friend returned with surprising news.

He had sold them easily.

Not only that, he sold them for a significant profit.

That moment triggered an idea. During the 1990s cigar boom, Cuban cigars were extremely popular in the United States but difficult to obtain due to trade restrictions. Demand was huge and supply was limited.

Scott realised there was a market.

What started as a small experiment quickly grew into a full-scale cigar smuggling operation.

The Dangerous World of Cigar Smuggling

Moving Cuban cigars from Cuba through Mexico and into the United States was far from simple.

The process involved navigating multiple countries, border controls, corrupt officials, and criminal territories. Each step presented new risks and challenges. At airports, customs officers closely monitored exports. In Mexico, various checkpoints and criminal groups controlled different regions.

Then there was the US border.

Crossing into America with illicit goods required careful planning and trusted contacts. Even once across the border, smugglers still had to travel through checkpoints and surveillance zones before reaching major cities.

Scott spent years navigating this system, often moving hundreds of boxes of cigars at a time.

At the peak of the operation, he was bringing roughly 600 boxes of cigars into the United States every few weeks. Instead of selling wholesale, he built a network of wealthy clients and sold directly to them.

It was a high-risk business, but it was also extremely profitable.

Celebrity Clients and Chicago’s Elite

Scott’s cigar business eventually connected him with a surprising customer base. Many of his buyers were wealthy professionals, business owners, and high-profile individuals.

Through a well-connected watch dealer in Chicago, he was introduced to athletes, celebrities, and prominent figures in the city.

Among the people he encountered were Chicago Bears legends, actors, and even basketball icon Michael Jordan.

Despite the glamorous environment, Scott remained disciplined about how he operated. He avoided flashy spending and drove inexpensive cars to reduce the risk of losing assets if authorities confiscated them.

His focus was simple: earn enough money to build a legitimate future.

Building a Legitimate Business Empire

After several years of cigar smuggling, Scott achieved the goal he had set for himself.

He left the business before law enforcement closed in and used the money to build something entirely different.

A legitimate fitness empire.

He opened gyms, built a large fitness equipment company, and became involved in the boxing world as a trainer and adviser. Over time he worked with notable fighters, including Mexican boxing legend Marco Antonio Barrera.

His gyms expanded, his equipment business grew, and he eventually built a massive 40,000-square-foot fitness facility.

For someone who once believed he was destined for prison or death, the transformation was extraordinary.

The Lesson of Trust

After decades in both the criminal world and the business world, Scott says the biggest lesson he learned is about trust.

In the streets, loyalty often disappears the moment things go wrong. People betray each other for money, revenge, or survival.

According to Scott, very few people can truly be trusted.

Yet he also credits a handful of loyal friends for helping him survive the most dangerous periods of his life. Those relationships ultimately helped him move forward and build a different future.

From Criminal Past to Redemption

Today, Scott Anthony describes himself as a man who has paid for his mistakes and rebuilt his life through legitimate work.

He is a businessman, a father of eight children, and now an author sharing his story publicly for the first time.

For decades he lived quietly, avoiding attention and staying out of the spotlight. Now he believes his experiences can serve as both entertainment and a warning.

His journey from Chicago street gangs to international smuggling and finally legitimate success is proof that even the most unlikely stories can take unexpected turns.

Scott Anthony was once a young man who believed he was destined for nothing.

Against the odds, he proved himself wrong.
