Patrick McCann’s life story is one of crime, punishment, faith, controversy and unexpected reinvention.
Appearing on the Terry Stone Connection podcast, the Salford personality, also known online as Pal McCann, spoke openly about his Irish Traveller upbringing, years spent in prison, conversion to Islam, viral social media fame and ambitions for the future.
It was a wide-ranging and often provocative conversation that explored how McCann went from committing serious offences as a teenager to becoming an outspoken online commentator with millions of views.
Growing Up in an Irish Traveller Family
McCann was born in the West Midlands and spent much of the first decade of his life travelling between camps with his Irish Traveller family.
Although he attended school occasionally, constantly moving meant that he received little consistent primary education. His early life instead revolved around family, work and the Traveller community.
McCann recalled accompanying his father and brothers as they knocked on doors looking for tarmacking work. He believes this gave him an entrepreneurial mindset from a young age, as the family would continually search for the next job rather than settling after securing one customer.
His mother eventually wanted a more settled life and moved the family to Salford. It was there, McCann said, that his outlook began to change.
Crime and Organised Criminal Culture in Salford
During the interview, McCann described the Salford of his youth as an area with a powerful reputation for organised crime.
He said younger people would hear stories about older criminals and attempt to emulate them. Rather than seeing robbery as something distant or unusual, it could appear to be a path already established by previous generations.
McCann first entered custody as a teenager after stealing a car. According to his account, his offending then escalated from car theft to burglary and eventually robbery.
He explained that many people around him followed a similar route. Cars were stolen to facilitate other offences, while burglaries were sometimes committed to obtain keys for faster vehicles.
Looking back, McCann acknowledged that he was proud of his actions at the time but now feels differently.
Although he said nobody was physically injured during the robberies he participated in, he recognised that threatening violence could leave victims with lasting fear and trauma.
The Jewellery Shop Robbery That Changed Everything
One of the most dramatic moments in the podcast concerned an attempted robbery at a jewellery shop in Altrincham in 2005.
McCann claimed that he and several others used a Ford Granada as a battering ram, driving it through a large Rolex display window in broad daylight.
However, the attempted robbery quickly went wrong. A security van reportedly rammed the vehicle and trapped it against the shopfront, preventing McCann from escaping easily.
Members of the public then intervened and restrained him until the police arrived.
McCann received a four-year sentence but ultimately served approximately three years after being refused parole. He returned home in 2008 and reunited with his partner, Becca, whom he repeatedly credited with helping him leave armed robbery behind.
How Youth Custody Can Desensitise Young People
McCann also spoke about his experiences inside young offender institutions.
He described an environment where violence could become part of everyday life, with confrontations between prisoners and officers, rivalries between wings and constant pressure to defend yourself.
In McCann’s view, imprisonment at a young age can interrupt emotional development. He suggested that children who experience trauma, humiliation or bullying in custody may become determined never to appear vulnerable again.
This, he argued, can contribute to extreme violence later in life.
His comments offered a stark perspective on the impact of youth imprisonment, particularly when punishment is not accompanied by education, rehabilitation or emotional support.
An 18-Year Sentence and a Decade in Prison
After remaining out of prison for several years, McCann was arrested again in 2015.
He told Terry Stone that he was convicted of conspiracy to possess firearms with intent to endanger life following a series of shootings connected to a dispute.
McCann maintained during the interview that his involvement centred on facilitating access to a firearm, although he said he was ultimately sentenced in connection with the wider conspiracy.
He received an 18-year sentence and spent around ten years in custody before being released in 2025.
Throughout that sentence, McCann said his partner remained his primary source of emotional support. He described calling her whenever he arrived at a new prison or experienced difficulties behind bars.
Patrick McCann’s Conversion to Islam
One of the most discussed elements of McCann’s recent public life has been his conversion to Islam.
McCann admitted that he had previously held anti-Islamic views. He attributed this partly to his strong Catholic upbringing and a fear that Islam threatened the religion he already followed.
However, reading about Islamic beliefs while in prison gradually changed his perspective.
McCann became interested in the connections between Christianity and Islam, particularly the presence of figures such as Jesus, Mary and John the Baptist in both traditions.
He explained that his conversion was not immediate. Instead, it followed years of reading, questioning and reconsidering ideas he had previously accepted.
A significant moment came during Ramadan when McCann decided to fast for a day in solidarity with Palestinian children. Shortly afterwards, the sudden death of another prisoner forced him to reflect on his own mortality.
That same day, he took the shahada and formally became Muslim.
Viral Fame, Online Abuse and Controversy
After leaving prison, McCann attracted significant attention online.
A video showing him celebrating Eid with his partner went viral, generating both support and intense criticism. McCann said much of the abuse focused on his conversion, while his partner was also targeted despite not being Muslim herself.
He admitted that his response to critics can sometimes be confrontational. However, he also argued that people should educate themselves before judging an entire religion or community.
His online presence has since expanded beyond faith. He regularly discusses politics, immigration, British identity, Palestine, Irish history and social division.
Although his opinions do not fit neatly into one political category, McCann described himself as someone with a political state of mind rather than a conventional politician.
A Potential Influencer Boxing Match
The podcast also addressed McCann’s public dispute with online personality Shinny Show Live.
Following a series of online exchanges, McCann said he wanted to face Shinny in a boxing match, potentially through Misfits Boxing.
Despite acknowledging Shinny’s previous boxing experience, McCann confidently predicted that he could knock him out.
Whether the proposed fight takes place remains uncertain, but the rivalry has added another dimension to McCann’s growing public profile.
Music, Business and Future Ambitions
Before becoming known for political and religious commentary, McCann and his partner had already built a substantial online audience through Mario Music.
He claimed the platform had accumulated tens of millions of views and said his original ambition was to develop a music label and eventually launch an app.
McCann hopes to own the platform’s intellectual property, work directly with advertisers and help promote emerging artists.
The interview ended with the suggestion that he could become Manchester’s answer to a major music executive. McCann jokingly rejected a comparison to Simon Cowell, instead choosing the more intimidating comparison of Suge Knight.

Patrick McCann remains a divisive figure.
His criminal past, political opinions and outspoken social media presence will inevitably attract criticism. However, his conversation with Terry Stone revealed a more complicated story involving childhood instability, institutional violence, family loyalty, religious change and a desire to build something new.
